Apparently not the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP). That’s what the Mineral County Sheriff’s office found out the last week of February. In 48 hours, Mineral County received calls for two separate shooting incidents . One of those incidents occurred on Hwy. 6 near Montgomery Pass. In a letter posted to social media Friday morning , Bill Ferguson , sheriff of Mineral County, accused the Nevada State Police Highway Patrol of “ abandonment ,” citing an incident where a man was shot on a highway where the sheriff said NSP officials refused to respond. A Nevada court ruling prohibits local law enforcement from using federal programs to circumvent state forfeiture laws. The case concerns the Nevada Highway Patrol’s seizure of nearly $90,000 from Marine veteran Stephen Lara. The court declared the federal equitable sharing program illegal in Nevada.
